There’s nothing quite like an early fall morning in the CSKT Bison Range. The air is crisp, carrying the scent of pine and earth, and the rolling hills are painted in gold and rust as the leaves turn. It’s one of my favorite places to explore, especially during the rut, when the elk are at their most active.
This time, I wasn’t hiking in—I was taking the scenic drive, which winds through the range and offers some of the best wildlife viewing in Northwest Montana. It’s the perfect day trip if you live nearby, especially if you have kids. Bison, elk, pronghorn, and even the occasional black bear can all make an appearance, and since you can stay in your car, it’s an easy way for families to experience the magic of Montana’s wild spaces without a strenuous trek.
As I rounded a bend, I caught sight of him—a massive bull elk stepping out of the trees, his breath curling in the cool air. The sun had just broken over the ridgeline, casting him in golden light. He paused, lifted his head, and let out a piercing bugle that echoed through the valley. My heart pounded as I grabbed my camera, steadying my hands against the window frame.
Click.
The shot was perfect—mist rising, light pouring in, the raw power of the moment frozen in time.
Whether you’re a photographer, a wildlife enthusiast, or just looking for a peaceful drive with your family, the Bison Range never disappoints. Every visit offers something new, a glimpse into the untamed beauty of Montana. And sometimes, if you're lucky, you get to take a piece of it home with you—one perfect shot at a time.
